Formalising the InformalSector

Nigeria has over 100,000 collectors locally known as scavengers picking waste from dump sites, repairshops and households. All too often these collectors handle the waste incorrectly and expose themselves to hazardous material such lead, mercury, cadmium, chromium, barium to name a few. The collectors sell the waste to informal recyclers who further pollute the environment through open burning and dumping of hazardous material (read more in an article here).

Hinckley’s role is not to stop collection of ewaste in Nigeria but protect the collectors health whilst providing them with a fair and sustainable income for them and their families. ECAN members are required to sell the waste only to formal recyclers approved by environmental agencies in Nigeria.

By formalising the informal we can protect the venerable, save lives, create jobs, and protect the environment.

EmpoweringWomen

Over 100,000 Informal collectors operating in waste sector of which we estimate 22,900 To be women. Our target to increase this to 50,000 by 2030. Hinckley will formalise the informal practices through training, PPE issuance and fair pay.

An estimated 70-80 % of collectors working for formal recycling companies in Lagos are now women as a result of awareness and recruitment drives.  Hinckley is expanding formal collection to 20 points nationwide creating opportunities for thousands of women to become formal collectors.

Hinckley employs 30 women across the business currently. The new business would create an additional 40 direct jobs for women with Hinckley. Further jobs would be created as the business expands with a target of 150 By 2030.

Electronics Buy Back

Hinckley is Nigeria’s leading repair and remarketing of used technology products repairing over 1000 items per month. The objective of our remarketing service is to optimise the residual returned to our clients by operating on a profit share or fixed purchase price mechanism. This is achieved through our dedicated remarketing team located across Nigeria.

Hinckley remarkets equipment nationwide which ensures we are able to optimise the revenue return to our clients. Hinckley operates an open market in the goods it manages through the use of internet sales channels and dedicated regional sales teams.

– Remarketing Profit Share

The profit share service starts with the receipt of an asset list or inventory from a client with details of the equipment specification, quantities and location. A forecast of resale values is provided in advance. On arrival at Hinckley, equipment is subject to core technical processing tasks to determine the resale value of equipment.

These core tasks include electrical safety (PAT) testing, testing the functionality of the equipment, data wiping using approved software and cosmetic grading and assessment. Successfully processed equipment is then sold through Hinckley’s established remarketing channels. Hinckley reports monthly values achieved from the resale of equipment.

– Buyback

The buyback solution is focused on generating best in market values from used equipment whilst delivering clients data protection and environmental regulatory compliance and demonstrating sustainability & corporate social responsibility.

Equipment which meets the functional and cosmetic requirements will be purchased based on an agreed value in advance inclusive of all costs subject to functionality and condition at time of processing.

Starting with receipt of an asset list or inventory from a client with details of the specification and quantities, a buyback quotation will be issued detailing the purchase price of each item in advance. On arrival at Hinckley, equipment is subject to core technical processing tasks to determine the final purchase price of equipment. These core tasks include electrical safety (PAT) testing, testing the functionality of the equipment, data wiping using approved software and cosmetic grading and assessment. Successfully processed equipment is then sold through Hinckley’s established remarketing channels. Hinckley reports the condition of each item and final purchase price.

The buyback service allows organisations to identify the budget across a range of equipment and over a given time scale.

Battery Recycling

Lithium-ion batteries of all formats, chemistries and states of charge are processed through a mechanical process. This process breaks down the batteries to inert materials that minimize the risk of fire or explosion, and subsequently separates the resulting materials into two main product lines: battery materials (black mass) and mixed copper/aluminium.

Black mass is a a product that consists of a mix of cathode and anode battery materials, including lithium, nickel and cobalt, as well as graphite, copper and aluminium. These are primarily made up of the foils found within the lithium-ion batteries.

  • Minimal solid and liquid waste
  • Zero combustion
  • Zero wastewater discharge
  • Relatively low air emissions

Battery Testing and Regeneration

Batteries are the critical component in energy storage systems that determine performance under specific operating conditions. It is important for batteries to provide enough energy for the load, temperature conditions, and duration they will experience during their useful life. Battery manufacturers provide general specifications for their cell or module performance, but these need to be evaluated in combination with application-specific parameters.

Hinckley’s regeneration system is a large-scale professional battery reconditioning system that is suitable for testing and reconditioning lead-acid and lithium-ion batteries. It is integrated with charge and discharge testing, pulse desulfurization, high-frequency activation, constant current overcharge repair, capacity grading. It can repair the common issues of lead-acid batteries such as the water-loss, sulfurization, and slight voltage imbalance. It is especially suitable for the maintenance and reconditioning of all kinds of lead-acid batteries, which has the obvious effect on prolonging the battery life.

IT Asset Disposal and Refurbishment

A desirable route many organisations can choose for equipment that merely requires a refresh in the IT product life cycle and still meets the needs of the business is to refurbish existing equipment and redeploy it back into the organisation.

Hinckley provides a range of solutions that enable an organisation to have equipment collected from one location, refurbished, upgraded if required, reconfigured and redeployed to the same or another designated site.

Units can be selected for refurbishment or for reuse within your business and as such are processed further in accordance with agreed tasks. Equipment defined by the redeployment specification is subjected to a number of tasks, as agreed with the client to ensure the unit is visually and technically acceptable for redeployment. If passed, it can be upgraded or downgraded as appropriate to comply with the redeployment specification. Image builds, external & internal refurbishment and re-asset can also be undertaken.

This flexible approach allows clients to redeploy equipment with different levels of refurbishment and cost.

Data Destruction

Hinckley delivers a range of services and solutions to destroy confidential and protectively marked data. These solutions will ensure compliance to data protection legislation, governmental standards and the strictest security policies for data destruction.

Data is destroyed through controlled processes and procedures with each item individually tracked through our IT asset management system.

These methods of data destruction can be provided at Hinckley’s secure facilities or at customer site as required.

– Data eradication with certification

As part of Hinckley’s core processing tasks, all data bearing items are data wiped using approved Blancco software. Subject to safety testing and functionality checks this key task allows successfully data wiped equipment to be sold for reuse generating residual value.

– Hard Drive Shredding

Hard drive shredding is employed where hard disk drives and other data bearing devices cannot be successfully wiped or where it has been decided that equipment cannot be reused. Hinckley shreds the hard drives using state of the art shredders.

Ewaste Collection and Recycling Services

Every organisation large or small is legally bound to dispose of WEEE (Waste Electronic and Electrical Equipment) in an environmentally responsible manner. Hinckley’s Collect and Recycle Services (CARS) is aimed at organisations that have obsolete or unwanted technology equipment. It is for customers that want an efficient and economical solution that delivers compliance to data security and environmental legislation.

Under the Collect and Recycle Service, Hinckley recovers redundant electronic items, securely destroying all confidential and protected data and manages the recycling of WEEE – exceeding the reuse, recycling and recovery of targets. As you would expect all equipment is tracked and reported.

The Collect and Recycle Service presents a value-added solution to the disposal of unwanted electronic assets. Your business risks are assured, and you can be safe in the knowledge that your assets will be treated in a legally compliant manner and that all equipment is handled through a quality assured safe and environmentally responsible process.
